Overview

The mural opportunity came from an open call on Craigslist that was submitted by a recording studio that is adjacent to a park. The image chosen was one out of three I submitted. The final art was created in acrylic and latex paint and measures 19.4’ x 30’.

Goals

For this project I was free to come up with whatever I chose to paint. I chose the great American musician Woody Guthrie and one of his songs to play off visually. The specific song was looping in my head at the time and it fed a positive narrative in an urban area not always so. The environmental challenge was to break up the bland, static walls of the building and somehow incorporate the people's park next door. I chose to paint a sleeping, dreaming Woody Guthrie with children climbing out of his head, up to the stars. I utilized the physical greenery of the park next door to extend his body shape off the building and to act as his cover while he sleeps out under the stars.

Process

The collaboration with the owner was straight forward- I was not asked to modify anything therefore so it was up to me to be critical of what worked on a larger scale. Installation was relatively smooth and I met some very helpful folks in the neighborhood during the layout and painting process of the mural.
