Client: St. Lukes Hospital

Overview

The project is a sculpture of kiln-cast, formed 3/4 inch edge-polished float glass, set in stainless steel “feet” anchored into a concrete base for stability, and anchored with bent 1/2 inch stainless steel braces and rubber grommets. Decorative large river rock was placed at the base of the glass pieces and two large assemblies of glass and rock flank a lighted bed of decorative blue “landscape” glass.

Goals

The courtyard in which the sculpture is placed is a "pass-through" and wait area that is contiguous and provides access to several different parts of the hospital facility. The objective was to "warm" the area with art that spanned the space.

Process

I was brought in by HNTB architecture and given a visual sample of the "flavor" that was desired. We coordinated with the general contractor, the owners, architects, and design team to whom we provided and sought approval for design, all technical and structural considerations, and installation parameters.

Additional Information

The project required design and fabrication of molds, custom hardware, many approval stages for budget, aesthetics, and structural and technical considerations. The piece gives an otherwise uniteresting pass-through area a warm glow and visual focal point.
