The 180 foot long electronic canopy illuminates pedestrians passing below each light ring. The technologically contemporary work emphasizes movement through pedestrian walkway. The design and movement of the LED rings is a subtle reminder the the movement and flow of air that passengers and planes alike create. When an object moving through a space disrupts the pattern and the surrounding fluid, it will cause vortex and waves. The artwork is located over the moving sidewalk in the Pedestrian Concourse of Parking Garage C.
One of the goals for this project was to interact with pedestrians moving through the space. The 100 rings pay tribute to Dallas Love Field’s Centennial in 2017. The effervescent color shift of the rings in response to the constantly shifting airflow and heat patterns created by pedestrians makes the corridor lively. Central to the design of the artwork was the incorporation of movement of air created by people and aircraft, each of which leaves subtle vortex patterns in the air as they move through. The rings are the visual reflection of these patterns. Positive traveler engagement is an over-arching goal for all public art in the airport. This work contributes substantially to this goal.
Collaboration is central to an effective art project. The Office of Cultural Affairs Public Art Program hosted community dialogues to discover what will enhance the travelers experience. Professional artists, architects, engineers and representatives from Dallas Love Field and resident airline staff reviewed submissions from over 300 artists to identify the best solution for this space. The selected artists worked with site staff and public art staff throughout the process, including the complex refinement of the final programming that provides animated visual engagement for the short duration of the passage through the corridor.
This work represents innovative and creative uses of technology in contemporary art. Developed with a team of highly skilled technical and creative staff, the work is a showcase for the combination of multiple media and inventive artistic vision.

[ manifesto ]
Art matters. Attention to the details of our environment leads to love of place, which brings us to take responsibility for the spaces where we live and work. And by extension, the people with whom we live and work. And by extension, to our local communities, our cities, our nations, and our world.
We champion the role of artists in our society. We need artists to provide us with inspiration, creativity, and imagination, and to help us envision a better world.
Architects and designers know that remarkable design can change everything. They connect the dots across disciplines, collaborating with artists to make the world a more beautiful place. They are the ultimate patrons of the arts.
In the process, design professionals promote imagination and creativity, and through their commissions, make original art integral to and accessible in people's lives.
Art in our public and private spaces helps us fight ordinary buildings, ordinary streets, ordinary cities. We celebrate the extraordinary.
The architecture of our buildings and the design of our interiors affect our happiness and well-being. Each of us deserves a daily dose of inspiration.
