Overview

Tide, is an installation that compounds waves with wavelengths.

Goals

Taking form as a series of undulating posts, the installation transforms in color palette over the course of the day. In daylight, five pastel beach tones shine in the sun. At dusk, the sheered tops of the posts catch the color of the sky, appearing as a blue surface above rainbow stripes. Finally, in the dark, LED lights illuminate the posts, causing colors to bounce and multiply.

Sited in a new plaza and pathway along the San Diego marina, the 120 foot long snaking strand brings pedestrians from the highly trafficked Harbor Drive to the waterfront Marina Walk, breaking into 5 waves to allow for circulation.

Emerging from the grid of the site’s paving pattern, Tide’s waves rise up as square, powder-coated steel tubes. Stone aggregate obscures the posts’ connection to the ground.

Process

After Architecture collaborated with architects, landscape architects, lighting designers, and fabricators on the placement and realization of the project.
