Overview

Stealth is a spatial work of cognition, illusion, and transformation. The sculpture acts as an urban instrument binding neighboring spaces through visual corridors. The continuously folded form creates an urban portal connecting specific locations in the neighboring environment through a series of interlocking anamorphic projections of pure geometric figures. The double cube and the elongated hexagon are perceptible as pure figures only from The Rich Plaza (Woodruff Arts Center) and from the Peachtree Street approach via 15th Street.

Goals

The sculpture was conceptualized as a site specific work that is created by, of, and for the Promenade Tower Plaza and its environs. The site is a triangular plaza in front of the Promenade Tower which borders 15th street to the north and is across the street from the High Museum of Art and The Woodruff Arts Center. The plaza was redesigned by HGOR Landscape Architects in 2012 with a granite plinth designated for a site specific sculpture commission. Stealth was selected as that commission. The sculpture subtly transforms itself, expanding and collapsing in-between two dimensional figure and three dimensional form as viewers move toward, around and through the work.

Process

Stealth is a contemporary urban sculpture designed by Tristan Al-Haddad and his team at Formations Studio in collaboration with Jim Case of Uzun Case Structural Engineers. The piece is a monolithic cast-in-place reinforced concrete form standing 33 feet tall in the plaza of the Promenade Tower at 1230 Peachtree Street in the Arts District of Midtown Atlanta. The sculpture was commissioned by Cousins Properties as an extension of the urban art realm created by the High Museum Campus located directly across the street from the sculpture. Sinclair Construction Group was the onsite concrete sub-contractor and Thomas Concrete was the concrete mix designer and supplier. Reinforcing steel for the project was donated by Nucor as a CRSI member.

Additional Information

Materially the piece is alchemical, rendering reinforced concrete as an indistinguishable gray matter of light, shadow, and sensually smooth fluid mass.
