Overview

“Spirit” is a multi-facetted sculpture created specifically for the entrance of the University of Oklahoma Children’s Medical Center in Oklahoma City. The sculpture’s main focal point is 12 colorful kites that were welded and formed from stainless steel. Each was then fitted with acrylic panels and meticulously trimmed to form the kite frame. The kites are illuminated with 5,000 LED’s to create a spectacular evening display of color, movement and excitement.

Goals

The large landscape at the entrance of the Children's Hospital at the Oklahoma Medical Center was the perfect opportunity to create a large-scale, spectacular work of art. A vibrant sculpture, combining color and light to create a piece filled with energy for all ages to enjoy, was the goal for "Spirit". Matthew created a multimedia sculpture encompassing whimsical kites and life-size children playing amongst them. Childhood dreams, ambitions and the magic of flight are embodied in "Spirit", created by the illusion of the kites floating and drifting in the breeze.

Process

Matthew collaborated with Jorge Charneco and Cory Baitz at Miles & Associates to create a piece to fit the space at the main Entrance of OU Children's Hospital. Special considerations had to be arranged since the piece was incorporated on the top deck of the parking garage.

Additional Information

Anchoring the Oklahoma University Children’s Medical Center, "Spirit" captures the innocence of youth in a heartwarming, colorful setting. It embodies the innocence of youth, dreams of the imagination and hope for tomorrow. The sculpture features twelve steel and acrylic kite sculptures, along with three, larger than life bronze children sculptures celebrating the joys of life.
