Goals

Spectrum is inspired by Southern Florida’s striking sunrises and sunsets, sunlight dancing off the ocean’s surface and the region’s prolific flora and fauna. The sculpture is illuminated at night with LED lighting, resulting in a dramatic and beautiful presence, both day and night. The work is intended to be a beacon that attracts viewers for photo opportunities and meetings, and to serve as a way finding element to guide visitors through this new multi-use development.

Process

Gordon Huether worked closely with developer Duncan Hillsley Capital to create a monumental art experience for Dadeland, a refined retail and residential development in the Miami metropolitan area.

‘Spectrum’ is intended to be a beacon that attracts visitors and locals alike, to take photos by and remember their visit to this part of Dadeland. The piece is also an excellent way-finding tool, helping to orientate oneself, guiding and directing visitors through the complex.

The 25-foot tall sculpture with an approximate footprint of 9 feet is constructed from brushed aluminum and twenty rectangular dichroic glass panels, each carefully fastened with bespoke engineered fittings specifically designed for this installation. Light and its manipulation have been a pivotal point and core element of Huether’s oeuvre. This sweeping sculpture and focal piece for Dadeland adds a magnetic allure and dazzle to one of the nation’s most sophisticated retail developments.
