Overview

Shall We Gather sits in the receiving hall of the Blacksburg Lutheran Memorial Church, a gathering before and after the service. The piece spans 36 feet and is about 12 feet tall stretching across a large brick surface that had become an interior wall after the construction of an addition.

Goals

Darcy was contacted to create a piece to make the brick wall, that was now central to the church's greeting space, welcoming. The church had a limited budget for the work so the design became elongated. In this way the piece filled the space but did not use a massive amount of material. The colors used are selected to make the piece especially welcoming and calming. This piece of public art creates a lovely space for parishioners to gather themselves before they gather with the congregation.

Process

Darcy designed and created the work working closely with a church board member that was the art department head at Virginia Tech University.
