Overview
River Return at the Concepcion Portal is the first portal project along the Mission Reach portion of the San Antonio River Walk in San Antonio, Texas. The spiraling stone walls and swirling engraved floors bring together the natural and architectural patterns of this site between the Mission and the River.
Goals
This artwork was commissioned by the San Antonio River Foundation and is the first of five portal projects for each of the Missions. It is part of a larger national park designed by Rialto Studio Landscape Architects. San Antonio’s five Missions were recently designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Process
The project was a collaboration of the Rialto Studios and the Artist. The artwork is inspired by the round tower near the river, and the art walls spiral off of the footprint of the tower. We worked together to bring a sense of both the river and the mission into people's daily space.
Additional Information
For all the kids who do not get to swim in the San Antonio River, this is a chance to feel the rushing currents and swirling eddies of the river without getting wet.
