RELATIVATOR is the contraction of Relativity and Elevator. A multi-media work with a varied dimension, as it involves the entire glass shaft and cab of the elevator, whereas, the function of the host site itself is the driving force to give the site context of the freedom from gravity.
Given the airport location and the elevator site, it was the perfect place to take Einstein's famous Elevator Thought Experiment which led to his Equivalent Principle of 'Gravity equals Acceleration' out of his head, and into the physical experience of this airport elevator riders. We simply made the elevator into a walk-in weighting scale with a cab floor display, where riders notice their weight changes in realtime as they feel vertical acceleration and deceleration of the ride.
I was able in work early on with the architect team from their 25% design doc. stage. We were able to get permission for the using the function of elevator itself to drive the interactive dynamics of the artwork. We picked the suitable elevator type design in order to better incorporate the exterior and interior design of the elevator shaft and cab etc. So we were able to organically merge the function and design of the in concept and in aesthetics.
The fulfilment of work as an artist, in this case, is being able to have enough time to identify the contextual relevance of air travel with Einstein's thought experiment, which come together nicely together, transforming a humble elevator ride into a deeper first person realisation of one of most elementary of the set of inertial frames that we earthlings are all born into and live by.

The global online community that celebrates design projects featuring commissioned artworks.
[ manifesto ]
Art matters. Attention to the details of our environment leads to love of place, which brings us to take responsibility for the spaces where we live and work. And by extension, the people with whom we live and work. And by extension, to our local communities, our cities, our nations, and our world.
We champion the role of artists in our society. We need artists to provide us with inspiration, creativity, and imagination, and to help us envision a better world.
Architects and designers know that remarkable design can change everything. They connect the dots across disciplines, collaborating with artists to make the world a more beautiful place. They are the ultimate patrons of the arts.
In the process, design professionals promote imagination and creativity, and through their commissions, make original art integral to and accessible in people's lives.
Art in our public and private spaces helps us fight ordinary buildings, ordinary streets, ordinary cities. We celebrate the extraordinary.
The architecture of our buildings and the design of our interiors affect our happiness and well-being. Each of us deserves a daily dose of inspiration.
