Overview

16 colorful and beautifully illuminated installations lit up Detroit's Central Business District as part of LuminoCITY. Each installation consists of aluminum nodes and trusses, covered with color gradient fabric. Brightly colored architectural installations established iconic oasis points connecting to nearby business and storefronts. At night, the LuminoCITY network is activated by a series of unique light and sound choreographies designed to for each day of the week and with the aim of extending public space into the evening and creating a vibrant night atmosphere.

Goals

One of the goals of LuminoCITY was to offer organic city discovery routes for up to 800,000 visitors coming to Detroit for the North American International Auto Show, with the aim to showcase the growth and immense potential that the city has experienced in the last 4 years. Statistically, most visitors are focused on the Cobo center activity and bypass the city core offerings.
The second goal was to establish a relevant winter activation strategy during Detroit’s coldest months with temperatures routinely reaching 5-10 deg F (-15 C) and demonstrate that residents and visitors alike can coalesce around public space, and strengthen a link with local business and organizations.
By actively connecting residents and visitors with local businesses and public amenities we can strengthen the growth of a community at a massive scale. Coffee places, bike shops, and restaurants need to be discovered to have a sustainable future. Carefully networked art and architecture installations have the power to bring people together and organically discover the vision of a new city full of possibilities.

Process

Stereobot collaborated with Quicken Loans Community Investment Fund, Bedrock Detroit, Downtown Detroit Partnership and DTE Foundation on the LuminoCITY project.
