Overview

This 125sf bathroom remodel was part of a large remodel in a loft located in the SOMA district of San Francisco. The overriding design goal for the loft was create a gallery as living space. We decided to treat this room as a multidimensional installation instead of the typical approach of applying finishes to flat surfaces in bathroom design.

Goals

The concept was to create sort of a 3 dimensional pathway that moved uninterrupted from the horizontal to vertical elevations. We used two different porcelain tile as our materials palette: the larger scale tile had a flat matte finish and the linear mosaic tile had multiple textures and finishes to create a more rustic look. Along the mosaic pathway floats a vanity clad with a veneer in a Caleidolengno pattern.

Process

We worked with master tile setters to achieve the precision needed to pull off the design concept. Exact alignments were an absolute requirement and they rose the occasion beautifully. The cabinet makers also understood the direction we were going and paid amazing attention to detail to veneer layout as it relates to the rest of the space.

Additional Information

This was a challenging design to execute and everyone involved was up for the problem solving required to make it work. Driving the overall execution of this project was an amazing General Contractor. The finished space is feels like an art installation in and of itself and the client is thrilled with the results.
