WHAT IT WAS
Illumination turned five! Once again The Morton Arboretum turned to Lightswitch to direct and design Illumination – Tree Lights at The Morton Arboretum, a non- traditional holiday experience that supports The Morton Arboretums core mission of being ‘The Champions of Trees’.
WHAT WE DID
Serving as both Creative Directors and Visual Designers, the Lightswitch team worked with The Morton Arboretum to build on four years of runaway success for a fifth year. The mantra this year was ‘more’. More lights. More projection. More experience. We achieved all of this…and more! Enhanced lighting, brighter projection and more area covered were supplemented with LED ‘Illum-edalion’ wearable devices available for guest purchase. The Illum-edalions worked in sync with the lighting throughout the experience, making the visitor part of the show, not just a spectator.
WHY IT WORKED
Who doesn’t love ‘more’?! More lights, more projection and more experience resulted in more guests – the fifth successive year of increased guest count. ‘Time ticket’ entry greatly reduced pitch points and congestion, and enhanced the experience for all. The Illum-edalions added participation to the visitor interaction, and were a hit with guests of all ages. In year five, we are proud that Illumination has transitioned from a novelty, to a tradition. So what is next? Why year six, and helping Illumination – Tree Lights at The Morton Arboretum become a beloved Institution!

[ manifesto ]
Art matters. Attention to the details of our environment leads to love of place, which brings us to take responsibility for the spaces where we live and work. And by extension, the people with whom we live and work. And by extension, to our local communities, our cities, our nations, and our world.
We champion the role of artists in our society. We need artists to provide us with inspiration, creativity, and imagination, and to help us envision a better world.
Architects and designers know that remarkable design can change everything. They connect the dots across disciplines, collaborating with artists to make the world a more beautiful place. They are the ultimate patrons of the arts.
In the process, design professionals promote imagination and creativity, and through their commissions, make original art integral to and accessible in people's lives.
Art in our public and private spaces helps us fight ordinary buildings, ordinary streets, ordinary cities. We celebrate the extraordinary.
The architecture of our buildings and the design of our interiors affect our happiness and well-being. Each of us deserves a daily dose of inspiration.
