Client: Wellspring Family Services

Overview

Titled “Bright spots on the Horizon", the atrium sculpture was designed for Wellspring to provide a colorful and dramatic feature for the entrance and sky bridge of the new building. The medium is kiln-formed glass with a stainless steel hanging system. Overall dimensions are 21’ tall by 6’ wide by about 2’ deep, descending 2 floors. The colorful iridized glass changes color depending on the direction and intensity of light, and is visible from two busy arterials on both sides of the building.

Goals

The artwork was a priority and was planned into the building at an early stage. The hanging sculpture and donor wall are intended to provide some whimsy to visiting parents and children who might be having domestic problems. The hanging glass circles were coordinated with a donor wall sculpture that is located in the lobby below. The names on the donor wall are sand-blast engraved and then paint filled. Each disk is suspended from aluminum standoffs, which allows colorful shadows to project on the wall behind

Process

Planning and installation required close cooperation between the studio, the architect, the public art agency, and the contractor. Detailed drawings were required to establish adequate connection points for the sculpture at the ceiling. Installation of the glass had to be scheduled, and was completed on a very tight time line.
