Flip-Discs is a display technology made up of 12mm plastic discs that physically flip at up to 40 frames-per-second from one colored side to another, making a small sound as they flip. The piece of software developed, called Particles, allows people to see themselves on the display, as well as interact with graphics on the screen.
Our goal is to create mediums where the content can evolve and adapt to whomever commissions the piece. This requires the medium itself to speak to people, and feel flexible enough to carry whatever content is created for it.
The first version of Flip-Discs was created by BREAKFAST in 2011 when they experimented with vintage Flip-Dot technology from the1960s, accelerating its speed from about 4 frames-per-second up to 18 frames-per-second. In 2017, BREAKFAST redeveloped the technology from the ground up (electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial design, and software), creating a new dynamic, kinetic medium that can produced quickly and stand the test of time.

[ manifesto ]
Art matters. Attention to the details of our environment leads to love of place, which brings us to take responsibility for the spaces where we live and work. And by extension, the people with whom we live and work. And by extension, to our local communities, our cities, our nations, and our world.
We champion the role of artists in our society. We need artists to provide us with inspiration, creativity, and imagination, and to help us envision a better world.
Architects and designers know that remarkable design can change everything. They connect the dots across disciplines, collaborating with artists to make the world a more beautiful place. They are the ultimate patrons of the arts.
In the process, design professionals promote imagination and creativity, and through their commissions, make original art integral to and accessible in people's lives.
Art in our public and private spaces helps us fight ordinary buildings, ordinary streets, ordinary cities. We celebrate the extraordinary.
The architecture of our buildings and the design of our interiors affect our happiness and well-being. Each of us deserves a daily dose of inspiration.
