Overview

Encuadre Ilimitado is a permanent architectural artwork installation built on the facade of Hyatt House San Juan- a conspicuous location in a major metropolitan area of Puerto Rico.

One component are structural elements representing an aerial city map, as if when you fly over San Juan you look down and witness its urban blueprint.

A second component of the piece is its protean nature – alternating surrealistic animations and accompanying lighting color changes. At night, the piece illuminates from within, providing the spectator with ever changing visual experiences, as well as a representation of that same urban blueprint, now at twilight.

Goals

Prisa Group, the company who commissioned the project, has focused on resort and residential development for over three decades and is highly regarded for its enhancement of natural landscapes and the integration of art in the communities it serves. True to their integrity, and innovative for other Hyatt Houses around the world, they sought to add a unique artistic enhancement to their development of Hyatt House. In doing so, the building stands out significantly from the surrounding architecture and competing hotels. The work beautifies the city area where it lives of what would have otherwise been just another insignificant, corporate structure obstructing skyline. The hotel was built in a new area of San Juan that is being developed around the new Puerto Rico Convention Center. There are still a few dark spaces yet to be constructed and so, the addition of this digital scenography sculpture illuminates its surroundings. Since it is a constantly evolving work of art, it always provides novelty to the spectator and adds dynamism to an inherently static format. With the addition of this artistic piece on its facade, the Hyatt House Hotel in San Juan Puerto Rico presents itself as the modern, dynamic, high-end alternative.

Process

The collaboration process was between the artist, the client and developer's engineering team, and the audio visual company installing the equipment. This process can be better explained by simplifying it into phases.

First Phase: Brainstorming.
After grasping the overall concept of what the client wanted to do, and working within a given budget, various sketches, mock-ups, and animatics were provided to the client for their feedback.

Second Phase: Practicality.
Once there was a favorite design selected, modifications were incorporated in order to comply with engineering and technical requirements.

Third Phase: Install.
With the final design approved, we needed to coordinate the logistics of installation. An efficient schedule was produced to have the piece installed, working, and programmed by the hotel's inauguration date.
