This spiral-of-life tribute consists of 13 carved, etched and frosted crystal panels assembled into a free-standing sculpture that honors the naming donor's wife and son. The spiral is symbolic, suggesting life (DNA), the cycle of rebirth or resurrection, and the flow of blood through the chambers of the heart. The lobby of the cardiovascular hospital where this tribute stands features cylindrical pillars, a wide curving information desk, and an elevator that ascends fifteen stories via a cylindrical glass tower.
The artwork in this project was designed and fabricated at Amri Studio; it was not commissioned. The hardwood base and bracketing was created by a master woodworker.
We worked closely with the lead donor, Alan Ginsburg. It was he who chose the scriptural quotation that serves as the theme for the project: "Faith, it is a tree of life to those that grasp it." This teaching is carved into the glass in eight languages and a wide variety of fonts – lyrical, calligraphic, traditional, and contemporary – appealing to different ages and many cultures/traditions. The message is that faith transcends religion. (In fact, Mr. Ginsburg is Jewish and the gift he made was to benefit an Adventist hospital where his family had long received excellent care.) The undulating clusters of text visually echo the rhythm of the human heartbeat – an apt effect for a cardiovascular facility.
Overlapping images of leafy trees turn the sculpture into a memorial grove, while the progressive heights and curve of the panels form a healing luminous embrace – a true "tree of life." A delicate ribbon of white-on-white etched text unites the spiraling: "There is a dance of miracles holding hands in a chain around the earth."
This LED-lit sculptural tribute can be viewed from many angles, even from within. Because of its transparency, this piece presents the viewer with multiple overlaps of text, light, texture and meaning, thus visually expressing the message of the world as one.

[ manifesto ]
Art matters. Attention to the details of our environment leads to love of place, which brings us to take responsibility for the spaces where we live and work. And by extension, the people with whom we live and work. And by extension, to our local communities, our cities, our nations, and our world.
We champion the role of artists in our society. We need artists to provide us with inspiration, creativity, and imagination, and to help us envision a better world.
Architects and designers know that remarkable design can change everything. They connect the dots across disciplines, collaborating with artists to make the world a more beautiful place. They are the ultimate patrons of the arts.
In the process, design professionals promote imagination and creativity, and through their commissions, make original art integral to and accessible in people's lives.
Art in our public and private spaces helps us fight ordinary buildings, ordinary streets, ordinary cities. We celebrate the extraordinary.
The architecture of our buildings and the design of our interiors affect our happiness and well-being. Each of us deserves a daily dose of inspiration.
