Overview

Project Watershed: ten 4×6 foot painting/ecoresin semi-transparent panels for a 100 foot feature wall in the newly redone AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Pomona, NJ.

Goals

The theme for the building and the art is healing through nature. My painting panels are layered with satellite maps of the community served by the hospital and embedded between two layers of ecoresin, which is recycled from water and other bottles. With this bird's eye view, patients and visitors can examine the art to find the location of where they live or work which assures them that they are never far from home. The panels also depict the relationship and close proximity of local priceless wetlands, including the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. The aerial view reminds the viewer about our human presence in an area which must be protected from environmental dangers. The installed work also serves as a wayfinding component from the registration area in the main lobby to the new restaurant.

Process

I met with the Community Cultural Project Coordinator many times prior to the project completion. We did a number of site visits with the Construction Project Manager to map out the 100 foot wall. The fabricator of the eco-resin panels was 3Form. I met with their representatives and then submitted my paintings layered with satellite images for fabrication along with many phone calls and emails to ensure that my vision was complete. At hanging, I worked for multiple days with the installation crew so that the work was hung and lit to my satisfaction. Each panel weighs 80 lbs so there was a requirement for reinforced walls.
