Client: Capistrano/Tower Grove South

Overview

Center of Contemporary Art asked me to create an installation at their gallery. The result was four ceramic columns that refers to the Brooklyn Bridge and our Saint Louis Eads Bridge. Gallery viewers wrote birthday wishes on ribbons to honor the city of Saint Louis 250 birthday. After this show, the four columns got a buyer and installed in front a condominium building in the city.

Goals

Your four bridge columns look wonderful at Michael and John Capistrano place. I think one of your most alluring installations yet. Naturally, the work itself is always a treat to gaze upon, but there is something about the scale of that property, the placement of the columns, and the fit with the gardens that just really makes it work," wrote video artist, Mr. Craig Williams.

Process

My client is a big believer in helping other to improve their lives. We wanted a positive message uprightness, building bridges, overcoming with help from each other. The flat building roof, flat top of the artwork goes together. The colors of the clay and the building bricks makes for harmony. The relationship of in and out, positive and negative spaces, all flow with the Bridge Columns and residential building.

Additional Information

I love to see the four Bridge Columns working together for this neighborhood. They are made in four sections, each column is 200 lbs. and about 8 1/2 feet tall. The message of loving together is for the black and white folks in the community. when lighted for night view, the column acts like beacon.
