Overview

Hand-blown glass artist Abby Modell created a modernist approach to lighting for the 2016 Bloomingdale’s Holiday Windows. This one-of-a-kind Chandelier Trio Collection, LunarRock Pendants, Cosmic Cylinders and StarrBurst, visually merge together through color, design and finishes forming a unique celestial lighting landscape called “MoonGlow.” Abby’s artistic impression of the night sky creates infinite cosmic reflections and galactic harmony within the work. The moon is universally seen around the world, evoking smiles and dreams.

Description:
One-of-a-kind hand-blown glass, translucent mirrored finishes, Swarovski crystals, fire polished glass, polished nickel hardware. Sold together as one chandelier trio installation. 37.5 sq. ft.

Goals

The goal of the project was to create a chandelier to be auctioned for charity, as well as create an amazing visual display for the 2016 Bloomingdales Holiday Windows. All proceeds of this project benefit The Child Mind Institute. I was given a few inspirational words: Glow, Sparkle and Light, along with artistic leeway on the creative process. Additionally, I was asked to create the environment that my work would be situated in.

Process

The process involved total collaboration with the Bloomingdales visual display team. Design concept illustrations, glass colors and detailed mechanical sketches were all subject to approval throughout the process. As we all agreed that attention to detail and excellence of visual display were most important, the process was rewarding and the result successful.

Additional Information

Being chosen as a selected artist for this project was an honor and career highlight for me. Giving back holiday joy to viewers from around the world, as well as being able to support such a worthy cause, made this even more special.
