Overview

My design for the Art Glass Screen was based on the Confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. I wanted travelers to St. Louis to be greeted by a screen at the gate that celebrated our Great Rivers. During my research I found that explorers looked for the "Compass Plant" which bent to the north. The circular portals payed homage to the rich history of water based commerce in the region. The design had to work in 3 panels 5.5 ft high by 3 ft wide with an overall glass "canvas" of about 50 sq ft.

Goals

The glass screens were part of the renovation project in Terminal 1 of Lambert Airport and the modernizing of the airport facility. The screens were to offer a burst of color and show of creativity from regional artists It was also to be a focal point for travelers to view as they arrived in St. Louis.

Process

The Airport Art Advisory Committee and VIA Partnership worked with the artists. The final group of artists, nine total, submitted designs. My design was done with watercolor. The artist took the original watercolor to Germany to meet with workers at Franz Mayer of Munich to discuss the completion of the designs by using various glass painting techniques. Different craftsmen were paired with different artists based on the designs.
