This installation's design is hip, active, engaging, fun, colorful, sophisticated, reflective and relevant to the diverse community that BART serves. Using vibrant colors and dichroic glass, the art glass discs loan themselves nicely to the transmission and refraction of color, light, pattern and shadow, all of which, add to the complexity of the installation and metaphorically speak to the multidimensional qualities of the community. The installation consists of 50 handmade, fused glass discs, ranging from 18” in diameter to 36” in diameter.
"A-Round Oakland" is a public glass art installation at the Coliseum Airport Connector BART station that is designed to engage the daily commuter, travelers departing or arriving at the Oakland International Airport, the occasional train rider and everyone in between. The multitude of colors captured within the fifty hand made glass discs activates and complements the space. Not only do the discs add color and movement to the glass walls, but the light passing through each work of art creates a secondary work of art projected onto the station's floors. The dynamic interplay of the glass discs and the shifting daylight creates a unique and welcoming environment, strengthening the purpose and function of this Bay Area Rapid Transit train station as a 'port' for the community.
The artist collaborated closely with the Bay Area Rapid Transit Team and created a concept, which tells a story about movement, diversity, light and color, resonating with locals and visitors alike.
Art matters. Attention to the details of our environment leads to love of place, which brings us to take responsibility for the spaces where we live and work. And by extension, the people with whom we live and work. And by extension, to our local communities, our cities, our nations, and our world.
We champion the role of artists in our society. We need artists to provide us with inspiration, creativity, and imagination, and to help us envision a better world.
Architects and designers know that remarkable design can change everything. They connect the dots across disciplines, collaborating with artists to make the world a more beautiful place. They are the ultimate patrons of the arts.
In the process, design professionals promote imagination and creativity, and through their commissions, make original art integral to and accessible in people's lives.
Art in our public and private spaces helps us fight ordinary buildings, ordinary streets, ordinary cities. We celebrate the extraordinary.
The architecture of our buildings and the design of our interiors affect our happiness and well-being. Each of us deserves a daily dose of inspiration.
