Client: Jay and Susie Gogue Performing Arts Center

Overview

The Jay and Susie Gogue Performing Arts Center is a newly constructed 80,000 square foot performing arts facility that features a grand multi-story lobby. Within the space is a large curtain wall of windows and a striking skylight, which serves as an excellent backdrop for a custom suspended artwork. This piece was created to pay tribute to the brand of the school, as well as tie in the natural surroundings.

Goals

The design concept envisioned the expansive atrium as the location for some kind of large and impressive suspended art installation. After reviewing the finishes, themes, concepts, and university history with Wilson Butler, LYNNEL conceived a dynamic and thoughtful installation with our Summer Icicles. The acrylic icicles were chosen as they allow for light to reflect and refract nicely in the space, helping make a vibrant, dynamic statement.

With a thorough understanding of the angular skylight and location of the mullions, LYNNEL plotted out a map that would enable the icicles to hang at various heights below the skylight, forming a compelling arrangement as seen from anywhere in the space. The icicle lengths ranged from 4ft to 8 ft.

Process

In addition to a subtle inclusion of the university colors, the university asked that the artwork incorporate elements from the region’s natural environment. The original LYNNEL artwork Colorado was chosen, as it was an excellent image to modify and further personalize for the university.

The artwork took on a completely new look with the color modifications and nine thoughtful individual croppings for the varying icicle lengths. The resulting installation provides a completely custom piece personalized for the university.
