Welcome to the February issue of CODAmagazine, where we share the best design + art projects from all over the world. The magazine is published once a month by CODAworx.com – we’re an online community for artists and design professionals to showcase their work, collaborate with one another, and earn recognition for their projects.

 

The Written Word is the organizing principle of this month’s issue. Artists and designers have taken our relationship with typography, iconography, and whole words to new levels, using lettering as images to a strong presence in our built environments. CODAmagazine showcases this trend of putting the words front and center; we have selected 25 evocative projects that send powerful messages.

Featured projects include sculptures that are made up of multi-lingual phrases collected from the community, as well textual decoration of a homeless shelter with poetry. Letters, numbers, and icons are utilized in diverse ways with astonishing results: they are laser-cut in steel, shaped out of concrete, carved into clay, and overlaid in acrylic. At Washington State University, quotations on stewardship are carved into a bell mourning extinct species. In Greensboro, a canopy shades an outdoor area with steel mesh and intertwined letters.

It’s a spectacular collection—an example of the amazing things artists and designers can accomplish when they collaborate.
