  • Brief Description

The Brown County Playhouse plans a destination-worthy art work on the North side of the Playhouse. The artwork should have a true trompe l’oeil quality that will allow viewers to understand that inside this building is a lively theater with a rich history. Ideally, the art work would include a instagrammable area and use the stairs as an asset.

Established in 1949 by IU Professor Lee Norville and A. Jack Rogers of Nashville, the Playhouse is celebrating the 75th anniversary this year. Rogers supplied the land and barn for the theater and Indiana University managed the stock company. In 2010, Indiana University donated the theater to the Brown County Community Foundation. A Board of local volunteers has run the theater since that time. Along with Norville and Jack Rogers, others who devoted themselves to the Playhouse early on include Herman Wells, Andy Rogers, and R. Keith Michael.

Entrants should submit copies of artwork demonstrating trompe l’oeil skills, i.e. the painting should have photo realism with depth. From the entrants, 2-3 artists will be selected to submit their ideas in a sketch form. Selected entrants will receive a stipend of $250 for their sketches. The final selection will involve creating a painting in the ratio of the wall 72’ X 26’. The winner will receive $5,000 for their work. This final painting will remain the property of the Playhouse The painting will then be professionally photographed and reproduced in decal form and mounted on the side of the Playhouse as a mural.
