  • Brief Description

    Project Overview

PSE&G in partnership with Irvington Township is interested in receiving submissions from artists demonstrating their ability to provide completely realized mural artwork for the exterior display of the newly built Nye Avenue Substation at the intersection of Nye Avenue, and 21st Street. This art project is focused on acquiring public art that will be permanently displayed at the site of this new construction.

    Project Narrative

The City of Irvington in collaboration with PSEG and YENDOR presents a series of mural installations that celebrates the rich history, resilience and future of the township of Irvington by shining light on prominent public servants who helped to guide and shape the current culture and landscape. “Legends Way” will pay homage to six of Irvington’s past leaders whose bold advocacy, activism and unwavering commitment to community development transformed Irvington for the better and left a legacy for decades to come. These murals will be located in Irvington’s South Ward on the perimeter walls (Nye Ave. and 21st Street) that surround the new Nye Avenue Substation and will feature the likeness of champions like:

    1. Honorable D. Bilal Beasley
    2. Honorable Anna Scott
    3. Honorable David Lyons
    4. Honorable Lebby Jones
    5. Honorable Sandra Jones
    6. Honorable Ray Burgess
    Project Goals:
    • Create a public space that is inviting, pleasant and compelling for visiting businesses and residents.
    • Reflect the culture and diversity of the city through history and storytelling.
    • Reflect the mission of public service, the City’s commitment to transformation, and educate the public about the City services.
    • Be thoughtfully integrated into the architectural identity and design, materials, and palette.
    • Be contemporary, yet timelessly elegant, and meaningful.
    • Celebrate the sustainability goals of this project and the facility.
    • Be durable and maintainable in Irvington’s climate and urban environment.

The selected artist will be responsible for the design, fabrication, and installation of the mural artwork to be applied to nine (9) 8 ft. high x 10 ft. spaces along the perimeter wall of the Nye Avenue Substation. The artwork will become part of the township’s permanent public art collection. Selected artists are required to submit qualifications, and encouraged to provide illustrations (images, renderings), and a brief statement describing an initial concept idea for this project. It is hoped that a full range of styles and techniques suitable for an outdoor environment will be represented.

    Applicants’ Requirements:
