The Indy Arts Council and Damien Center are partnering on commissioning art for Damien Center’s new Indianapolis facility, including a mosaic tile project. The site for the mosaic project is an open, three-story elevator core, visible through the glass front window of the new facility and completely wrapping three sides. The fourth side has the elevator door openings, but the area around the openings is available for treatment. The surface area available for the mosaic artwork is approximately 1,700 square feet. The visual inspiration for the mosaic is the AIDS Memorial Quilt, in the sense that it should have a DIY/activist feel with plenty of visual interest across and around the mosaic surface. The artwork will be a highly personal tribute to the strength and diversity of the community of people living with AIDS.
