The City of Aurora will be commissioning a Public Art sculpture in the Sculpture Park adjacent to the David L. Pierce Art & History Center at 20 E. Downer Place. The sculpture design chosen for this project will double as creative seating and/or be otherwise interactive for the public. The sculpture must be professionally engineered, to the City’s satisfaction and approval, to avoid standing water and to accommodate required safety and liability concerns. The space available for this project is a triangle of lawn extending approximately 58’ from the sidewalk, up to 8’wide at the rear (north), and up to 28’ at the front (south) along the sidewalk. The space available lies between a historical building (east) and gardens with existing sculptural benches (west), and is at a grade of approximately 8% declining from south to north. Poured concrete is encouraged but not required; multiple, staggered, repeating forms are encouraged but not required. Specific forms should originate in concept from a reference to the history, culture, and/or natural environment of Aurora. This application process is a request for qualifications based on previous, similar work; this is not a request for a design. Artists may include an optional rough concept for the project with their application if they wish; all intellectual property belongs to the Artist. Should an Artist be selected for this project, they will then be paid to design a site-specific sculpture, in their own established style, to be approved by the City before implementation.
