The City of Surrey invites Expressions of Interest (EOI) from professional artists or artist teams to create a large-scale artwork on the East Elevation of the future Bear Creek Athletics Centre. The sporting amenities at Bear Creek Park are being upgraded to host sport competitions and support the needs of the community. The design includes an improved track and partially covered grandstand seating for 2,200 spectators. The East Elevation of the grandstand is what visitors will first see upon entering the park. This large expanse has four sheer walls each measuring 5.5m wide x 6.1m high. These walls will be the site of a large-scale artwork that welcomes people to the athletics centre and helps integrate the building into the natural surround of the park itself.

Bear Creek Park is a much beloved gathering place for the community. Families and children play in the waterpark and playground. Residents of all ages use the track and work-out equipment to stay fit and healthy. Small groups gather on the many picnic tables to talk, play games, and share meals.

An artwork is envisioned that welcomes visitors to the park and grandstand, while maintaining an inviting atmosphere that residents feel comfortable playing, exercising, and gathering around. Proposals should integrate the building with the natural elements of the park and carry a unified visual language across all walls to create a large muti-part artwork.

The artwork should speak to the ways in which human beings are connected to and a part of the natural world.
