  • Brief Description

The Washington Elementary and High School Alumni Committee is inviting artists to submit proposals for a public artwork to commemorate Washington Elementary and High School, formerly located at 205 Arcadia Drive in Greenville, South Carolina. The work will be installed on the site of the former school, which will be a new bus operations and maintenance facility for Greenville Transit Authority (“GTA Facility”). The successful artist/team must incorporate and commemorate the school’s history in its artwork. All proposals will be reviewed by a project steering committee comprised of Washington Elementary and High School alumni. A representative from the City of Greenville’s Arts in Public Place Commission (APPC) will also serve on the project steering committee as a non-voting member.

    Project Purpose

The history and stories acquired from viewing this memorial will be an everlasting tribute to an institution and group of people who are well worth remembering. The former Washington Elementary and High School in Greenville, South Carolina was one of the most successful historically black schools to emerge in the South during the 1960s. Athletic state champions, artists, musicians, community leaders, scientists, and scholars were among the alumni who thrived during its brief existence. This memorial will guide onlookers in their thinking and serve as a tool for connecting facts from the past to the present inspiring all who encounter it to work together towards building a better future.
