Metro Art invites visual artists and artist teams to submit their qualifications for an opportunity to design four (4) original, site-responsive artworks for large-scale temporary banners to be affixed to sound barrier walls surrounding the Westwood/VA Hospital Station construction site, as part of a visual mitigation measure for the Westside Purple (D Line) Extension Project.
The construction phase of the project provides a unique opportunity for temporary artworks that respond to the project site and the communities served including the greater Westwood area and the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA)West Los Angeles campus. The banners will be prominently installed on the sound barrier wall directly facing the front entrance of the Main Hospital at the VA West Los Angeles Medical Center, as part of a mitigation measure to promote a sense of place, safety, and walkability by providing public art.
The banners are not a permanent public art project and are temporary. They may exist as long as the construction phase of the Westside Purple (D Line) Extension Westwood/VA Hospital Station or for a shorter period of time, and banners may be interspersed with Metro marketing and/or public information banners. The selected artist shall produce four (4) distinct artwork designs, that can work together or independently. Original artwork designs will be submitted as high-resolution, full scale, digital files which Metro will have printed onto flexible banner material, such as vinyl. The selected artist will execute a Community Engagement Plan: activity(s) with the veteran community intended to inform and build awareness of the artwork design for the banners, in coordination with VA and Metro staff.
