Overview
The “Cathedral of Thorns” is a massive lighted labyrinth letting the viewer walk through to experience an artistic journey that speaks to history and takes life in a new and positive direction. The thorns represent painful times in the past but the light shining through the woven walls illuminate the future.
Goals
The monumental artistic concept, the “Cathedral of Thorns,” preserves and tells a story that the world must not forget. It helps all who visit it reflect on lessons from the past while celebrating the power of nature, and the new direction in which Mankind is capable of going when art is
part of the thought process.
Process
In the video the people who worked with me are Sinuhe Oomen, Daisy Casimiri, Otti Thomas me myself and IOM-AIM Research Peter van Bergen. In the artwork of the Labyrinth we have besides the biggest Dutch governmental culture fund ; Het Mondriaan Fonds, Het Prins Bernhard Culture Fund Caribbean Region , Landhuis Bloemhof , 45 local companies who participate with materials skills or money. We have 15 youngsters from the " Poko poko pero sigur" group and at least 75 private donors!
Additional Info
Seen from afar the walls form the profile of an Indian face from a now lost people and also symbolize the control and exploitation of the slaves during colonization. Yet the thorns become beautiful as they are now being used in a creative way. The maze they form holds objects of contemporary art from guest artists in order to express sharing and collaboration which is the beautiful side of human nature.
Art matters. Attention to the details of our environment leads to love of place, which brings us to take responsibility for the spaces where we live and work. And by extension, the people with whom we live and work. And by extension, to our local communities, our cities, our nations, and our world.
We champion the role of artists in our society. We need artists to provide us with inspiration, creativity, and imagination, and to help us envision a better world.
Architects and designers know that remarkable design can change everything. They connect the dots across disciplines, collaborating with artists to make the world a more beautiful place. They are the ultimate patrons of the arts.
In the process, design professionals promote imagination and creativity, and through their commissions, make original art integral to and accessible in people's lives.
Art in our public and private spaces helps us fight ordinary buildings, ordinary streets, ordinary cities. We celebrate the extraordinary.
The architecture of our buildings and the design of our interiors affect our happiness and well-being. Each of us deserves a daily dose of inspiration.
