Overview
This sculpture was commissioned for Mercy Hospital’s new "Mother Baby Center". 72 inches tall and a 55 inch diameter ring and rests upon a 48 inch diameter stainless steel base.
Goals
The building and the site location was determined before the commission was awarded. The subject matter was an obvious choice. I believed my challenge was how to treat the subject which has been done innumerable times across human history in a unique way. I believe this work achieved that end. Taking particular note of how the baby's heart is in the exact center of the circle.
Process
I presented four options to the selection committee. They clearly preferred this one and they awarded me the commission. Committee members approved the final maquette and participated in deciding the orientation of the work in the garden.
