Overview

The McRae Parking Garage at the SunRail Station was a collaborative partnership with the City of Orlando & Florida Hospital. The concept was designed specifically to marry the community visions of those partners & utilize the location & placement of the art as a welcoming visual beacon in Orlando's cultural corridor. 40'H x 12'W

Goals

The goals for integrating the artwork into this project were twofold. First, the imagery of plants and birds are all found in Central Florida's natural setting, celebrating the beauty & bounty of our natural flora & fauna. Secondly, the colorful artwork serves as an organic balance set against all of the linear architecture.

Process

I worked closely with Jason Burton, Senior City Planner, who gave me support throughout the project working with permitting, contract negotiation and city guidelines. Dana Callan, with Dittmer Architectural Aluminum, designed the aluminum framework and whose team also installed the mural.

Additional Information

The mural is entitled "Celebration of Hope and Creativity." The sense of scale of the artwork is welcoming to hospital staff, visitors and to the local community. There is an educational component to it as viewers can identify with the plants and animals represented. The artwork is an original painting at 40'high and 12' wide. I was awarded a special proclamation from Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, that February 27, 2017 is declared "Martha Lent Day"
