Overview
Macleod Trail Artwork enhances two new side-by-side diverging diamond bridges forming the southern gateway to Calgary. The bridges feature grills across their spans and railings above, marked by two towers marking the pedestrian path. The grills, towers and rails are inspired by motion, the sky, the site, and nearby waterways. These bridges are part of an innovative highway interchange called a diverging diamond, the first in Canada, which promotes continuous movement. At night, the grills and pedestrian towers are illuminated with programmable LED lighting promoting community connectivity with seasons, holidays and place.
Goals
The goals for this project include: providing wayfinding at the southern gateway to Calgary, reflecting the movement of the new diverging diamond infrastructure and the nearby Bowe River, marking the pedestrian path, providing pedestrian scale and interest, and providing daytime and nighttime amenity.
Process
Vicki Scuri Siteworks worked closely with the City of Calgary, and the design build team to realize this work including: the pedestrian rail, grills, project color, programmable LED lighting, and the light towers. Vicki Scuri Siteworks was in involved throughout the design process and during the construction of the work.

The DDI received a 2018 Minister's Award for Transportation Innovation in Construction as well as a 2018 Consulting Engineers of Alberta (CEA) Award of Excellence in Transportation Infrastructure - Roads, interchanges, airports, mass transit and ports and a 2018 CEA Award of Merit for Project Management.
