Overview

HCVT is an accounting firm, who had no art in their space but they wanted to include a major piece of art into the space for the first time. Felderman Keatinge Associates designed the offices to incorporate a 60’ expansive wall that could incorporate a large scale art piece that was all about movement, change and energy as one walked through the space.

Goals

The main goal was essentially to infuse the environment with a necessary energy for the inhabitants and all who entered the space. Artwork is a crucial asset to facilitate movement and thought progression in human interaction, so Felderman Keatinge Associates worked to determine the means to accommodate the space in an aesthetically pleasing fashion.

Process

As one walks the length of the mural it starts out with mostly non-graphic image of vaulted space in Italy, with trees in silhouette and enlarged figures that were originally created as wire sculptures but later transferred into a flat painted image. The artist first created a 20” x 30” image and then enlarged it to 9’ x 30’ so it became enveloped in the texture and depth. Since accountants digest and interpret information, essentially peeling away the layers, the artists wanted the work to be emblematic of that. To do so, they interwove layers that slowly peel away from the surface throughout the mural. The focus is not the surface, but rather the layers beneath. The painted self transcends through photographs of broken wood lath and plaster from a derelict building in North Carolina. Depending on where you start viewing the mural, either you are at the beginning or the end of the journey. It is all about their clients’ journey. Accountants help them to make decisions; analyzing companies and suggesting direction.
