Overview

Kinetic Artist Jeff Kahn participated in the 2013 International Kinetic Art Exhibit and Symposium. www.IntlKineticArtEvent.org. His kinetic sculpture, Three Moons Rising, was exhibited in the year long outdoor exhibit for the event. The outdoor exhibit is sited in the cultural district in the City that is under revitalization. By siting kinetic art in this district it attracts visitors, stimulates cultural interaction and creates a sense of place. This kinetic exhibit and cultural event is unique to the City of Boynton Beach connecting it to the community globally.

Goals

The City of Boynton Beach Redevelopment Agency renovated the Boynton Harbour Marina building a Harbour House and public plaza. Jeff Kahn’s, Three Moon’s Rising was purchased for permanent placement and sited in the project to satisfy the City’s Public Art ordinance. The Arts Commission approved the purchase and placement. This public art purchase satisfies the City’s Public Art Master Plan focus on Kinetic, Eco and Glass art as the top three art forms. These unique artworks brand the City identifying it’s Gateway to the Gulfstream tagline.

Process

The artist Jeff Kahn accommodated the budget for the purchase of the kinetic sculpture for permanent placement at the Boynton Harbour Marina. The unique sculpture fit the Harbour Marina Project’s entrance round about public space. It’s crescent shaped elements, as Jeff says, is reminiscent of the moon rising over the arching sky. It moves and changes like the planets around us. Some visitors say the kinetic sculpture elements remind them of billowing boat sails.
