Overview

California Baptist University in Riverside commissioned me to fulfill their Art in Public Places requirement and to introduce visitors to their campus and new sports complex. The 10 foot high by 10 foot wide sculpture will be cast in bronze and elevated on a five-foot high base.

Goals

Several years ago I was commissioned to create 25 foot by 25 foot mosaic mural of the image of their mascot, The Lancer, that now oversees the campus pool. As they expanded their sports program, they wished to portray the same image, but three dimensional.

Process

I worked well with the President of the University, Dr. Ron Ellis, in bringing his vision to life. It was important that we paid attention to how it would be viewed from the available site lines in this public location to maximize its impact.

Additional Information

I have to thank my wife for the project getting started. Sitting in my living room one day at the beginning, wondering where I was going to build a 10' high sculpture, I looked up at our pitched ceiling. Measuring 11', I took a deep breath and asked my wife if I could build it in the house. Thankfully, she said, "Yes!" The Lancer was delivered to California Baptist University in Riverside by the foundry on April 24, 2017. The dedication was held on May 5, 2017. In the end, it only cost me a new living room set.
