Overview

Curate and assemble a custom art collection for The Beekman Hotel, an historic Queen Anne building in lower Manhattan designed by James Farnsworth in 1881. One of Manhattan's first skyscrapers, it features 287 rooms, including 45 suites and two iconic "turrets" with private rooftop terraces and a stunning 9 story atrium and will feature two restaurants by Tom Colicchio and Keith McNally.

Goals

The artwork was to create another layer of depth, sophistication and magic for this already magical landmarked property. There are a total of 62 artworks in all media by over 22 artists and 3 new commissions that explored different aspects of the hotel such as its unique literary history and its location near City Park Hall and the East River.

Process

James Company designed the theme for the art collection, selected the artists and artworks for the guest rooms and public spaces, created the contracts for the new commissions on behalf of the building owners and collaborated with the artists and designers. Placement, lighting design and navigating the technical aspects of installing two of the commissions was done through a close collaboration with Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, the hotel's interior designer firm.
