Overview

Commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission for the fourth floor of the new San Francisco General Hospital, the project includes design and fabrication of art glass to enhance the therapeutic design of the space. Two works, 7.5' x 25' each, are installed within opposing windows in a main corridor, each backed by a light well. The third artwork is backlit, curved glass, 8.5' x 8.5', installed in a specially designed niche within public area of the floor. The compositions incorporate photographs of the native California shrub Western Redbud, creating a sense of peace and well being essential to healing.

Goals

The city of San Francisco and the hospital administration were fully dedicated to an extensive art plan as part of the evidence-based design supporting the therapeutic mission. To this end, fourteen opportunities were created for site specific, permanent installations, as well as unique artwork purchases from and additional fifty artists.

Process

The artist worked with the commissioning agency, the architectural team, and members of the staff and administration of the hospital to develop a strong sense of the site and the client needs. The artist continued to meet with various stakeholders while developing the design for feedback on what worked best for the site.

Additional Information

The artist worked closely with Dorothy Lenehan of Lenehan Architectural Glass, Oakland CA, throughout the fabrication process.
