Overview
The client was looking for a unique sculpture for the public space outside Skyline Tower in Bellevue WA. They commissioned sculptor Jon Krawczyk who is well known for creating organic forms that are often the antithesis of the materials. The resulting artwork created is polished stainless steel ‘cracked’ cube for the courtyard space outside the tower, artwork details: Jon Krawczyk, Kilroy on Ice (The Cube), 2014, Polished Stainless Steel, 8 x 8 x 8 feet. Location: Skyline Tower, 10900 NE 4th St, Bellevue, WA 98004.
Goals
The commission goals were to have a thought provoking and commanding sculpture settled into the architectural landscape of downtown Bellevue, WA. The city is a growing suburb on the east side of Seattle, WA and close to Microsoft's corporate headquarters. "Kilroy on Ice (The Cube)" integrated well into the overall design of the Skyline Tower building project by not only intriguing passerby's on the street but also offering interesting views from the tower workers above. Moreover, the city of Bellevue is pleased "The Cube" sculpture is a new addition to their growing catalog of public art.
Process
The collaboration process between the the Krawczyk sculpture team and the Kilroy design team flowed smoothly with much discussion on the front end of the best strategy to create a memorable and captivating public art work. In the end the art and design collaboration was a success with a this work being delivered on time by the artist and within the client's budget.
