Client: Interface

Overview

The piece is installed in Interface, a Manhattan membership-based meeting place for tech innovators, artists, and other creative people to gather, give presentations, hold meetings, do yoga, or just relax. Many tech companies (including Google), have moved into this neighborhood. The Chelsea art galleries are nearby, as is the Fashion Institute of Technology. The space is located literally in the middle of a block, equidistant from 6th & 7th Ave, 30th & 29th Street. It is accessed by a 75’ long corridor from the entrance on 30th Street.

Goals

At the end of the corridor, illuminated by Jason Krugman’s motion-sensing LED lighting, this piece rises on the facing wall. It was conceived so that it would show up dramatically from the entrance, all the way down the corridor and into the room.

The piece is composed of 1/2" laminated etched glass (10’ x 30”), backlit lit by sheets of LED lights, and surrounded by a steel frame. It is placed on a cedar strip of wood, once part of a Brooklyn water tower.

Process

The project involved collaboration with Peter Houk, Etched Glass, who sandblasted the glass, Suchitra Van, designer, who collaborated on the design, lighting by SGF Associes, lighting, and Depp Glass, Inc.
