Client: City of El Paso

Overview

Conceived by Brooklyn-based artist Matthew Geller, Chroma Booster is a 55' tall “cloud generator” designed for a public plaza in El Paso, Texas. The structure consists of a series of interconnected pillars constructed from industrial piping, and houses a dozen stainless steel collars. These collars feature high pressure misting nodules and LED lighting, activated by visitors at a control panel. Additionally, a series of downspouts showers the plaza below. Chroma Booster is located directly between the El Paso Convention Center and the newly-constructed Southwest University Park, creating a final installation that provides a visually fascinating feature in a high-traffic area.

Process

Metalab provided design development and fabrication documentation services for the vertical structure. As construction managers they coordinated with the fabrication contractor and worked to integrate programmable LED lighting and high-pressure mist systems into the tower prior to installation.
