Overview

‘Bamboo Forest’ is a stunning art installation that is seamlessly integrated into a private residence in Los Altos Hills in the San Francisco Bay Area. The finished installation measures 21 feet at its highest point and is integrated into a space measuring 15’W x 6.5’L.

Goals

For their architecturally sophisticated and modernist home, a private client asked Gordon Huether to create a unique interior installation that responded to the home’s clean lines and wooded setting, and conveyed their affinity for Japanese avant-garde art. The artist was engaged early on in the planning stage of the home, to create a truly integrated work of art.

Process

Working closely with project architect Mark English, Huether developed a concept for a bewitching stylized ‘forest’ that emerges from beneath the home’s central interior space. Each ‘tree’ is illuminated from within, casting a myriad of colors throughout the space as light glows through the dichroic acrylic apertures cut into the tree trunks and bounces off adjacent surfaces.
